minus has released a first rate selection of home grown artist albums over the past 18 months, with heartthrob, false and gaiser all creating long players of real substance and this trend is set to continue in 2009 with arguably the label’s most significant release of recent times. louderbach’s long awaited second album autumn represents another jump in the evolutionary cycle of minimal techno, having developed from the largely instrumental project that gave us enemy love into a fully-fledged song based outfit. as a result, autumn has a much deeper feel than its predecessor and indeed breaks new ground, with the dark metaphors of gibby miller’s often chilling vocal performances fitting hand-in-glove with the ominous landscapes and broken architecture that troy pierce constructs so effectively. drawing on shared influences such as bauhaus, coil and joy division, the duo have conceived an album of emotional depth and exquisite detail, appropriating the best elements of these early-eighties pioneers and reinterpreting them through a contemporary lens to achieve a perfect balance of style and content. it’s the result of an unspoken understanding that spans thousands of miles from their respective homes in l.a. and berlin and this distant intimacy is a naturally occurring theme throughout the album, manifesting itself as dark, twilight tales of melancholy romance, burning obsession and the slow, disintegration of desire

he making of this record inadvertently began in cuba in january 2008. powershovelaudio was recording in la havana some of the best contemporary cuban singers and musicians. the resulting recordings were of an inspiring beauty. the situation was that powershovelaudio had this outstanding collection of voices, woods and brass, all infused by the tropical warmth. it was first-class material that should be put in the best hands possible, then maayan came to mind. ônight longö is a synthetic work. maayan has inexplicably, quickly and with incredible precision captured the essence and the expressivity of the cuban musicians and taken it to a hitherto unknown place. maayan is of course well-known for her diligent talent in inserting voices of quality in her mixes, but in this occasion the result is more than surprising. instead of concentrating in her signature minimal beats, maayan has experimented with different cadences, depths and moods, leaving behind her swirl a disconcerting record of inspired beauty. this art in this record is graced with photography by one of the best and most influential photographers in the world: moriyama daido. maayan asked moriyama san for permission to use the cover image, a request which moriyama san, after listening to the record, gladly accepted

1986, chicago. jody fingers finch is 18, not yet able to gain access to all of the spaces in which his first production will soon get airplay. he saves up the cash himself and records it in the basement of staple singers member bob murphy, who prefers the moniker bm recording studio. one 8-track reel-to-reel machine, one afternoon, $200 cash. a handful of cuts are recorded, including a stripped-raw, bare-bones track jody calls jack your big booty, an undercover piéce de résistance about his friends mothers backside. another is dubbed whistle worm, a meandering, experimental ride, riddled with strange noises and staccato high hats. bob murphy is likely confused. the tracks are brutally raw, lo-fi at best

paolo martini apparently had a taste for all things beats from an early age. he bought his first single at the age of thirteen - the classic sound of philadelphia by mf.s.b. a role model for all italian djs, paolo began servin up the tunes in the early eighties, but it was a chance meeting with dj alfredo in 1988 that really turned the tide for paolo. alfredo was then resident at amnesia in ibiza and responsible for bringing the first batch of house music over to italy. paolo embraced the genre and has never looked back, paving the way for other aspiring djs willing to follow in his footsteps. in recognition of his achievements

asd008 sees the return of alex krueger and a welcome one at that! this oneÆs 5 tracks deep (including a digital exclusive) and includes a pair of fine remixes from londoner-in-berlin, mark henning, ôblasted bitchö is tigerskin at his best. the title cut is a feast of sonic trickery, with sounds playing off each other beautifully to create a wide, dense soundscape which, paired with clipped percussion, clever dancefloor arrangement, evil laugh & crude vocal sample this one delivers tough. henning, a man known for his abilities with sound design himself, takes a darker route with his interpretation which, while still driving, is more of a heads down late night affair û riddled with oddball delays and some unnerving vox efx. ôwhat theö takes a turn to the darkside, moody, sharp, reveb laden and pulsing, the track is real heavy business watch out for that unholy belgian hardcore synth riff a la ômentasmö, thereÆs a real æmomentÆ in there. to round off the original cuts. responseö continues seeing tigerskin provide a straighter groove but one which displays some sterling keyboard work and strong break. finally, henning provides another remix of the title track as the digital only addition all too important these days. futuristic deep, tech-house is about as close as a description anyone needs for this superb final piece of an equally superb package.
